This story takes place a couple years after "The Long Game" ends. So, if you haven't read "the long game" or "heated rivalry" you will get spoiled.

With Ilya's transfer to Ottawa to be closer to Shane-and Shane's own relocation after being unceremoniously released from Montreal-they have found not just a home, but a vibrant community with the Centaurs.

After 22 seasons on the ice and a combined five Stanley Cups, Ilya and Shane are finally ready to hang up their skates and focus on what truly matters: family. They embark on the heartfelt journey of becoming foster parents, driven by a deep desire to create a nurturing home together. When they see a photo of Elizabeth-a four -year-old who's been through too much-they both know they have to try. Elizabeth's early years were painful; her mother hurt her, and now she flinches around women, stays small and silent, and startles at loud noises.
