In the Iron Mountains, humanity survives by bargaining with demons. When the Kharonys rose from the dark- creatures savage enough to slaughter demons and humans alike- the last of mankind fled to a city made of stone deep within the highest mountains. The demons would protect their borders and wage war beyond them. In return, humans would offer up brides to strengthen the fragile alliance. It's a pact built not on necessity, not mercy. And beneath it lies an old prophecy: that demons and humans would only ever produce half-blooded sons, until the day a daughter is born, and she would be the world's salvation.
Kaida was left at the Western Temple with no knowledge of her parents, raised like all human girls to become pleasing, obedient, and worthy of selection. When she is chosen to wed a demon, she believes she has secured her place in a world where humans exist at the demons' command. By morning, her husband had vanished with no explanation. Only suspicion when he fails to report for duty as a guard on the border. Summoned for questioning, Kaida finds herself caught in a court of demons that sees humans as useful and little more. Whispers begin to follow her, along with rumors of the Nameless God, the creator of demons, who is said to curse women to slip into madness despite the sacred pendants meant to protect them. Kaida has no memory of her wedding night, begins hearing voices, and wakes from dreams that do not feel like dreams.
Then the Queen's firstborn son, known throughout the Iron Hills as Redclaw- the forbidden price, steps in and demands she be brought to the castle. Why he involves himself in a missing demon guard, no one knows.
Dragged deeper into a world where her life is a bargaining chip, Kaida must learn to hold her ground among creatures who expect her to kneel. Because if she is cursed, she cannot let them see. And if something has taken root inside her, she will have to master it before the court decides she is a danger to them all.
