She enrolled at Vanthorpe against her mother's explicit, grief-soaked warning. Maren has spent three years in the restricted archive reading papers about her grandmother's ancestral practice - papers written by professors who got everything wrong and credited Adaeze Voss as a 'community informant.' She can feel the dead in spaces the way other people feel temperature. She lies the way other people breathe.

The temple is the first place in her life that has felt like recognition.

Then a classmate goes missing inside it.

Then a second student is found at the threshold with altered eyes.

Then Elias Verne - forensic phenomenology track, psychometric ability he barely controls, three years of campus disappearances documented in a file he keeps locked - starts interviewing witnesses and writing her name next to everything.
