The heaviest chains are made in the mind, but we frequently assume that iron and stone are the only tools of captivity. When two people become attached to a version of themselves that no longer exists, a particular type of incarceration takes place. Living in a cell without bars, where the door is unlocked but the heart is too heavy to enter, is what it means to be imprisoned by a memory.
