Free enrolment to Youlton Academy, its most prestigious institution, extended to citizens across America without condition or cost.

No one questions gifts from those who hold the guns.

Youlton's true purpose has nothing to do with education. Buried somewhere in ruins, in hiding, in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they carry are the notes of Rosa. Scientist. Architect of the war. The woman whose mind unravelled the world and, if the rumours are to be believed, left behind the means to mend it. A cure. Not just for the fractured political order, but for the land itself the defrosted, poisoned earth that Europe and half the world now chokes on. The Sovereign wants those notes. It has always wanted those notes.

Kaila knows none of this.

She knows only her uncle's notebook. Weathered, obsessive, filled with coordinates she cannot place and dates that mean nothing yet. She knows the particular silence of Renton, her small and unremarkable town, and the way that silence broke the morning the Sovereign arrived. She enrolled in Youlton the same day. Not out of ambition. Not out of fear.
