Nova woke up on the endless staircase after tripping while waiting for her mom, only to find Kai and his dog Shadow already trapped there from the day before.
Together with Aria, a girl who had survived three days after discovering a mysterious staircase in the woods, they learned about safe steps that briefly blocked the horrors crawling up from below.
A pale, long-armed creature with scraping fingers attacked when they made noise, while a many-legged black-shelled thing descended from the fog above.
Then they met Eli, who seemed like another lost kid until his clean shoes, missing shadow, and Shadow's growls revealed he was a mimic that copied voices to lure them.
In the chaos of being cornered, Aria was killed by the many-legged horror, Kai was dragged away screaming, and Shadow was flung into the abyss.
Alone and exhausted, Nova refused the mimic's final lure in her own voice, smiled tiredly remembering her companions, and jumped into the black void below rather than stay trapped forever.
