Spencer Aspen Brown was always very aware of her mortality, indifferent to it mostly. Her mother would say it's because she didn't take her pills, but Spencer always knew it was something different- something deeper. If Spencer was only aware of how close her and Death would become one day, she never would have let her doctors try and separate them.

When Spencer's parents packed her and her brother up to move north, she didn't really think much of it. When her mother forced her to do an extra-curricular, she didn't really think much of it. When her team won states and had to fly to compete in nationals, she didn't really think much of it. When their plane went down, and they were stuck in woods that liked to speak to her- well, she had a lot to think about that.
