Irene Carney is a champion, a mastermind.
Making sure no one ate the food she delicately placed in the break room fridge was a system she learned to master. Learning what hairstyles she should wear to the ER was another one. One time, she'd managed to catch pancreatic cancer in a patient just before it became too late to treat. She was Dr. Unbeatable.
But Dr. Unbeatable had finally met her match.
Time had been her biggest opponent for years. She had so much to do: so many hobbies to pick up, languages to learn, people to meet and not enough time.
She would try to make time, but time would fight against her and win. When she was on shift, time went by to slow. When she was off, it went by too fast. There just weren't enough hours in a day.
Then, she got sick, and she realized rather quickly that time had won the war she'd been fighting for years.
There were moments she'd lose her strength. One hour, walking would be a chore. Six hours later, suddenly holding a scalpel triggered fits of shaking and uncontrollable sweating.
Her memory was slipping too. She was forgetting important conversations, events and diagnoses. She was losing the very thing that made her Dr. Unbeatable: herself.
She couldn't be on the job when she lost herself completely. She wouldn't. The very last place she wanted to be when she died was The Pitt.
