Unlikely Magics: The Hargrieves Casebooks

Erie has existed for approximately four thousand years, which is, by most metrics, quite a long time.

They have lived through the rise and fall of empires, and a small number of historical incidents they were almost certainly not responsible for. They have also acquired a daughter - Isadora Hargrieves, necromancer, private detective, and woman who considers a reanimated corpse a perfectly acceptable witness. The victims are, generally, cooperative.

Things become complicated when a serial killer begins leaving behind bodies that even Isadora cannot get answers from. The case also reintroduces Erie to exactly one person they had been quite certain was dead: Wesley - immortal, cursed, and somewhat inexplicably working as a detective at Scotland Yard this whole time. He had promised to check in every fifty years. He has not. Erie had assumed the prolonged silence meant something permanent.

Apparently not.

Still, they'll be able sort the whole borderline-unsolvable serial murders business out. A few centuries of radio silence is no reason two adults cannot be professional about things. They have survived considerably worse than each other.

Unlikely Magics is the first in an anthology series where magic is ancient, loosely regulated, and occasionally someone gets murdered. That part falls to Hargrieves Investigations. The next instalment involves a druid and an alien invasion. Erie wishes them the very best.
