Once in a Royal Marriage

I exhaled slowly, trying to calm the frustration building inside me from the endless passive taunts surrounding me.
But what could I even do?
This had always been my life - being docile, being easy to overlook, almost... nonexistent.
And torment for someone like me never ended with just a few cheap insults.
"Anyways, it's not like you're lovable," someone said casually. "You only married for convenience."
The words felt like the sharpest shard of glass piercing straight through my chest.
Not the marriage part.
But...Love?
Was I really not lovable just because I was quiet... because I was the ideal, obedient daughter-in-law everyone expected me to be?
A few nodded in approval.
Some added their own comments.
"Exactly," one of them said. "It's not like he would have married a girl like you if it weren't for the shares."
My eyes remained fixed on the flickering flames of the vintage chimney at the far end of the room.
Not lovable.
NOT lovable.
NOT... LOVABLE.
Some words hurt because of the past they carry.
And some come with extra daggers hidden inside them.
This was my life.
Unless... Unless one day I chose to stand up for myself.
Because there would come a time when I would look back at this moment and remember it as "Once in a Royal Marriage."
