Kakashi first noticed it on an ordinary afternoon.
The training ground looked the same as it always did-dusty grass, kunai marks carved deep into the wooden targets, sunlight filtering through the leaves above them. Nothing about the place had changed.
But Shikai had.
Not dramatically. Not in a way most people would recognize. To anyone else she was still the same quiet girl who moved with strange calm, the same shinobi who seemed to see attacks before they happened.
Yet Kakashi paused in the middle of throwing a kunai.
For a moment, he forgot to move.
Shikai stood several steps away adjusting the strap on her pouch, dark hair shifting softly in the wind. She hadn't noticed him watching. Her expression was thoughtful, distant in the way it always became when she was running those endless battles inside her mind.
Kakashi frowned slightly.
He had trained with her for months. Sparred with her. Argued with her.
So why did she suddenly look... different?
The thought irritated him immediately.
He turned away and threw the kunai harder than necessary.
Shikai glanced over.
"You're thinking again," she said calmly.
Kakashi sighed behind his mask.
"Yes."
He just didn't understand why she was the reason.
