When The Yellowstone supervolcano erupted it was so violent it ripped open reality. Purple crystals fell from the sky holding unknown powers in them. Those whose blood mixed with those of animals during the explosion merged in unexpected ways, often resulting in children with animal traits. Klara was unlucky enough to come from a line whose blood had mixed with a leach. Healing was her gift, but no one trusted a blood sucker. After removing a magic crystal from a council members' daughter. That crystal had enough power to heal several of the town people but not enough.
