This story takes place in the 1970s and follows a popular white college guy and a smart, responsible Black woman who mostly keeps to herself. Even though they come from very different worlds, they keep running into each other around campus. When they do talk, the conversations are short and careful. He doesn't want people to see him talking to her, and she doesn't want to be seen talking to him either because of how people might react at that time.
Things get more complicated when his father starts disapproving of him spending time with the Black guys on his sports team. His father is so against it that he pushes him to marry the daughter of his best friend instead.
At the same time, the guy finds out something surprising-one of the Black teammates he's really close with is actually the brother of the girl he keeps crossing paths with and slowly starting to like.
Now he's stuck between what his family expects from him and the feelings he's starting to develop, while trying to figure out what the right thing to do really is.
