Senhara National University looks exactly like it's supposed to. Clean walkways. Green status lights. Banners that read Stay Stable. Stay Well. The flux system runs through all of it - the infrastructure, the institutions, the implant at the base of every throat - and the dashboard always reads stable.

Everyone's implant sits flush. Seamless. The new models barely look like hardware at all.

Naoki Kisaragi's doesn't. It's older, bulkier, and it has never quite fit the way the system expects it to. He keeps his collar up, his sleeves down, and his questions to himself. Somewhere in the part he built from gray market parts, something pulses in five colors that don't exist in any official manual.

Naoki is a second-year engineering student at SNU with a robotics competition to win and a group of friends who are starting to feel like home. He grew up watching the Rekkō - the flux response teams who walk into the zones everyone else is told to leave - and has been building toward something ever since. SNU was supposed to be where that started.

But the compliance sessions are getting more specific. A classmate's seat has been empty for two weeks. The public safety advisories are using a word he's only heard once before - as a kid, in a bland hallway that smelled like disinfectant, with his grandmother's hand locked around his wrist.

Something is running underneath SNU that isn't on any official chart. And Naoki is starting to understand what stable is actually measuring.
