Theodore Black wants to make sure he isn't making a mistake, ever. He's lost too many people for him to mess things up and lose someone else.
Ignoring everyone around him seems like a good plan, don't get attached to anyone, they can die. Don't talk to anyone you aren't required to hear out, that can be the last time you hear their voice.
