"Why?" Kai choked out, the silver pendant heavy against his chest-the same pendent Arlos had stolen and returned as a taunt.
"Why make me stay if you only mean to hurt me?"
Arlos leaned in, his voice a lethal caress against Kai's ear. "Because a bird that stays by choice is a pet. A bird that flies back to its cage despite the blood on the bars... that, my sweet Kai, is a soul I can truly own."
Kai leaned away, trembling, his voice a ghost of a plea. "I'm not yours. Not anymore. I can't- i can't do this anymore."
Arlos's grip tightened, his knuckles white against Kai's throat. "You'll be mine until there's nothing left of you to break. And then, I'll own the wreckage, too."
"I can't brea-" Kai tried to force the words out as Arlos crushed his throat.
"Your lungs are mine to fill, Kai. You will breathe only when I grant you the air, and you will die only when I am finished with you." Kais vision began to blur from the lack of oxygen, but Arlos had made no move to losen his grip. "Every breath you take is a gift I can revoke. You live because I allow it, Never forget that."
