Emmeline is a poor tinkerer and steam engine mechanic on the brink of homelessness. When Captain Eustass Kid crosses paths with her working on a large contraption in the market next to various tinkered toys he becomes curious. Shocked as the strange woman runs her hands on his body over where his metal arm is connected he feels a subtle longing. When he offers her a job and a way to escape she jumps at the opportunity unknowing her acceptance and his proposal will lead to anything more than just a hired job. He's ruthless, cunning, and will do anything to get his way, and he's got his sights set on her.
