Seventeen-year-old Elara has inherited the role of Library Keeper, guarding the last underground repository of books hidden deep beneath the ruins of an old city. When Elara speaks to them, they step from the pages into her world - companions in her lonely duty, and reminders of why stories matter.

Everything changes when the ruthless Memory Cleansers - elite enforcers trained to hunt down and destroy all traces of narrative - discover the library's entrance. With her home and the lives of every character she protects at risk, Elara learns of the Book of Beginnings: a legendary manuscript said to hold the power to restore stories to the world and break the Cleansers' control over human thought.

Joined by Kai, a charismatic sailor from a sea-faring tale, and a small band of characters from different books, Elara embarks on a perilous journey across a landscape stripped of wonder. Along the way, she must confront not only the Cleansers who chase her, but also difficult truths about sacrifice, responsibility, and whether the world is ready to embrace imagination again.
