Superpowers could be fun if you weren't Lyra Kaine. If you weren't the human embodiment of everything cold, dark and scary.

The myth parents tell their children about to make them eat their vegetables. The shadow under bed or monster in the closet.

In another life, Lyra used to think maybe, just maybe, she was that child. Rather than the horror she actually was. That she was normal.

That she was free.

But imagination is a privilege she cannot afford.
