When Pravit Khankaew was twenty-three years old, he drove too fast on a wet road in Chiang Mai and killed a seven year old boy named Korn. He never forgot it. Neither did Korn's family. Twenty years later, Pravit walks into his eldest daughter's London flat on her twentieth birthday with a bakery bag and a confession that rewires her entire life. His debt to the Pornprasert family is due. And the payment, whether Namtan likes it or not, is her. Namtan Khankaew is broad-shouldered, brilliant, and completely blindsided. She is an architecture student who builds things carefully and trusts almost nobody. She did not ask to be handed to a stranger as settlement for an accident she wasn't alive for. Film Pornprasert is soft-faced, devastating, and furiously against every part of this arrangement. She is a medical student who fixes broken things for a living. She did not ask to be handed to a stranger either. She was already in love with someone else quietly, privately, in the way that costs everything when it ends. They are twenty years old. They are strangers. They are now, legally, each other's problem. What follows is not a fairytale. It is something messier and more honest than that two girls navigating a marriage built from guilt, learning each other in the spaces between resentment and reluctant admiration, falling apart and toward each other in the specific way of people who were handed the wrong inheritance and somehow made it into a home. Narrated by Airwin Buakaew Pornprasert household maid, fifty-three years old, employed since 1994, and absolutely nobody's fool.

Once childhood best friends who became enemies, Film Rachanun tries to avoid Namtan Tipnaree, a bold queer individual known for flirting freely, but their paths are constantly intertwined as they attend the same school, live on the same street, and Namtan keeps showing up at Film's apartment, often casually dressed and piling too much cream cheese on bagels. The two share a messy, painful history that Film wants to bury, yet Namtan feels there's unfinished business between them, including finding her great-grandmother's burial place, helping Film's sister Love through depression, and confronting an old promise Film made with Namtan by the East River to never leave each other behind, all part of a tangled web of life debts, family secrets, betrayals, and forgotten commitments. Even though Film insists she hates Namtan, when she realizes they're both awake late at night, she finds unexpected companionship in her former rival, two insomniacs wide awake in the city that never sleeps.
