In a world where the occult exists, it comes at a price. To wield occult powers, one must submit to the Law of Retaliation: losing a body part in exchange for an equal measure of power.
The Law of Retaliation strikes at random, and the body part lost is chosen just as randomly-arms, legs, head, or heart; anything can be affected.
This phenomenon is not without danger either; if the victim's soul cannot withstand it or is killed during the process, it will transform into a monster known as a Macrale
The risk of transformation has created unparalleled discrimination against the victims. Deemed potential threats, the Crippled are viewed by the general public as bloodthirsty creatures deserving of summary execution, and by governments as powerful yet unstable weapons.
The existence of the Crippled has altered history as you know it; wars and historical figures did not unfold as you know them.
