The merman had always watched her from beneath the waves since he was old enough to venture out on his own against his father's adamant refusal.

Every summer, that wide eyed girl with the deep brown skin would return with her high pitched laugh and her warm presence that seemed to excite the ocean itself and all its inhabitants.

To him, she was like the sun, otherworldly, entirely unattainable and not to mention forbidden. All the creatures of the deep knew that humans brought destruction upon all they came in contact with. But no matter how many times he tried to stay away, he always came back to watch her, to protect her from afar, to fall for her in silence year after year.

Until that night.

The storm raged seeking vengeance from any and everything in its path. The ocean remained deeply unsettled, its inhabitants thrown into a frenzy. Lightning descended from the sky illuminating the water in fleeting flashes. The ocean was at war with itself and current dragged him upward refusing to let go before spitting him out ashore.
