What if the world wasn't what you thought? What if the fairy tales you whispered as a child held the keys to your survival? In a kingdom where the sky is choked with soot and the soil is barren, magic is no longer a gift-it is a commodity. Under the iron rule of a Tyrant King, every drop of ancient power has been drained from the land, leaving the people of the Mire to battle a hunger that never ends. Twenty-year-old Elara Fairchild has spent her life playing the role of a mundane human. At the University, she tries to keep her head down-depending on her mood-swallowing the crown's propaganda as easily as the ash in the air. But Elara has a secret: the shadows she's always used for cover have started to whisper back. A brooding stranger with a dangerous streak as sharp as his blade, Haddon crashes into her life like a storm. With emerald eyes that hold the forbidden secrets of the "Old Days" he drags Elara from the safety of her lies and into a reality she never believed existed. A reality where Elves - hide in a secret, pocket-dimension of the world, jumpstarting the beginning of Elara's true life-and the end of everything she knew. As the silver amulet hidden beneath her clothes begins to hum with a forbidden, celestial resonance, Elara realizes she is carrying a volatile power that could either reignite the world or lead her straight to the gallows. In a treacherous journey of ash and starlight, Elara will find an unexpected, fierce love with the man sworn to protect her-a bond that entirely defies the King's law. But the price of truth is absolute: to discover who she truly is, the life she once lived must be burned to the ground. "The King sits on a throne of shadows and cold iron, believing he has locked the doors to the light. He thinks he has won because magic is gone, but he has forgotten that fire starts with a single, fragile spark." The shadows are talking. The amulet is waking. And the girl from the Mire is about to turn the

Winter, 1917. Dorothy never really thought that war would take her older brother, but like so many others before him, Ian enlisted and departed Canada in khaki, leaving Dorothy to care for the youngest Gaston, Charlie. The return of her employer's son eats away at Dorothy: why should he, the rich man's son, the spoiled brat, be back home sleeping in his bed while her brother sleeps in the muck somewhere in France or Belgium? Robbie Monroe isn't the brat who ran off for a great adventure. Nearly deaf in one ear and deeply lonely, he is a man struggling to put his life back together after his time "over there," and Dorothy seems to be the only one he can talk to. She doesn't want to trust him but she can't help it, and Dorothy soon finds herself with something she didn't realize she desperately needed: a friend. Before the war's end, fate has one final reminder for Dorothy that happy endings don't always happen in real life, no matter how much she tells herself they can. Set in in the weeks before the 1917 Halifax Explosion, Shadows May Fall is a non-traditional World War I romance.
