1985. Dennis Clinton, 35, is a successful author with a quiet life - until a newspaper headline stops him cold: William Barnes, a local lawyer, has been stabbed to death trying to break up a bar fight.
William was his childhood best friend. The leader of their group. The one who always went first.
The news drags Dennis back to 1962, when they were twelve-year-old delinquents running the streets together: William, the fearless leader; Robert "Bobby" De Rosa, the foul-mouthed kid in glasses who never shut up; Edward "Eddie" Boston, the short, chubby, kind-hearted boy they all picked on; and Dennis himself, the watcher, the one who remembered everything.
Told in two timelines - 1985 from the outside, 1962 from Dennis's point of view - When I was Twelve is a coming-of-age drama about friendship, cruelty, loyalty, and the moment boys realize they can't stay kids forever.
This story contains strong language, violence, and smoking, and is not intended for children.
Inspired by the 1986 film Stand By Me (directed by Rob Reiner, starring River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell) and its source novel The Body by Stephen King. The idea for this story came directly from that film and book - which is why there are similarities in tone and structure. This is my own version, written as a tribute, not an original creation claimed as wholly mine.
