Bridgewater, Virginia - Summer, 1958.

The fair arrives with music, laughter, and lanterns glowing against the warm night air. Families gather. Children run through the midway. The whole town celebrates beneath the bright lights.

But some people can only watch from the shadows.
Eighteen-year-old Silvia Cosca knows better than to step onto the fairgrounds. A maid for a prominent white family, she has spent her life learning the boundaries that keep her safe. From the dark edge of the woods, she watches the lights, the games, and the life she has never been allowed to touch.
Then she sees him.

Mark Wiggins, twenty-two, charming and easy with a smile, is spending the evening playing games with friends. The son of a respected local family and assistant to a professor at Bridgewater College, his life seems certain and comfortable.

Until the moment he notices a girl standing just beyond the tree line.

One shy glance becomes a conversation neither of them expected. One summer night becomes something far more dangerous than either of them understands.

Because in a small Southern town like Bridgewater, love between a white man and a Black woman isn't just forbidden.

It could destroy them both.

As whispers begin to spread and old hatreds rise, Mark and Silvia must decide how much they are willing to risk for a love the world around them refuses to see.

And whether the quiet promise born beneath the July sky can survive what comes next.
