The Silent Promise

Emma used to sit by the lake every evening.
People thought she loved the sunset.
But the truth was... she was waiting.
Three years ago, her best friend Daniel had left the town.
No goodbye. No explanation. Just a small note:
"Wait for me where we last smiled."
Everyone told her to move on.
But Emma believed some promises don't need words.
Days turned into months...
Months turned into years...
Still, she came every evening, sat on the same wooden bench,
watching the ripples in the water.
One day, an old man approached her and asked,
"Why do you wait for someone who may never return?"
Emma smiled softly and replied,
"Because he promised without speaking... and I understood without asking."
The old man looked at her with tears in his eyes.
He slowly handed her a small pendant.
Emma froze.
It was Daniel's.
"Where did you get this?" she whispered.
The old man replied,
"He saved my life in another city... but he couldn't save his own.
Before he died, he told me...
'Give this to a girl who waits by the lake... she will understand.'"
Emma's world shattered... yet somehow, she smiled.
That evening, for the first time, she didn't wait.
She stood up, looked at the sunset, and whispered-
"You kept your promise... I just didn't know how."
