Professor Ross had a reputation long before I ever stepped into his lecture hall.

Brilliant. Reclusive. Difficult.

Most students spent their time trying to get his attention. I learned quickly that being noticed by him was not the same thing as being liked.

It should have ended with a disagreement after class... one conversation that lingered longer than it should have. Instead, his attention settled over my life slowly, until I could no longer separate coincidence from intention.

There was something unsettling about him. Not just the silence, or the routines, or the way he watched people without seeming to care for them. It was the feeling that once he became interested in something, he would follow it to the end.
