Alaric Evander Voss returns from a world where he feels powerful and in control to the bleak, suffocating reality of the orphanage he's forced to call home. Detached and quietly resentful, he views the ordinary world, and the people in it, as beneath him.

Everything feels predictable until he meets Summer Linton, a bright, talkative girl whose warmth and optimism sharply contrast with the cold environment around them. Where Alaric is controlled and distant, Summer is open and full of life, bringing an unexpected energy into his carefully guarded world.
