One day, you buy a pack of bacon. You start to eat it, but one piece catches your eye.

A crispy, greasy piece of bacon. Your mouth waters, dripping with clear saliva. It is so beautiful. Such beauty must be preserved, at the will of possibly losing your own life. You eat the rest and scoop it up.

There's not a lot that can freak me out in this world. Only large animals with sharp claws, too many people touching me, bullies, hives, horror movies, sitting underneath fans or lights or anything that dangles from a ceiling, glass or wooden bridges, my mother, mosquitoes, public situations, taking a shower with nobody in the house, taking a shower with too many people in the house and crocks. He grabs my arm firmly, stopping me, and turns me to face him. The pain on my face contorts his expression. "What's wrong, Emma? Lost your voice, lizard?" I don't look at him; my head is hung low once again. "When I'm talking, you need to look at me!" he shouts, lifting my chin so I have to meet his gaze. I look at him, but it's not with innocence; it's with anger. "Oh, look, Emma's angry, everyone!" he mocks. "Just leave me alone," I say, meeting his eyes as I pull my arm free from his grip and walk away. He stares at me, shocked, as do all the kids around us, not expecting what I just did.
