Elena Vance lived in a world of red ink and shattered reputations. She sat in her cramped apartment, surrounded by boxes of her father's old files, trying to find the one transaction that would prove he hadn't been a thief.
When her phone buzzed with a summons to Vane Logistics at 9:00 PM, she expected a firing. Julian Vane was known for his temper and his efficiency. She didn't expect to find him sitting in a dimly lit office with two glasses of scotch and a legal document that didn't look like an audit.
"Sit down, Miss Vance," Julian said. He didn't look at her; he looked at the contract."Is there a problem with the Q3 projections?" she asked, smoothing her skirt. "The projections are fine. It's the optics that are failing." He slid a paper across the desk. It was a wire transfer for twenty million dollars, pending one signature.
Her signature.
Elena's heart skipped. That was the exact amount of her father's debt. "What is this?"
"That is your fee," Julian said, finally meeting her eyes. "For a one-year commitment to the most difficult job you've ever had. You're going to be the next Mrs. Vane. And you're going to help me burn the men who are trying to take my company."
Elena looked at the money, then at the man. He was beautiful, dangerous, and clearly out of options."I have rules," she said, her voice trembling only slightly. "So do I," Julian replied.
"Rule one: We never get caught."
