Velour Wounds

It began with the sound of anklets-
not loud enough to be remembered,
yet never quiet enough to be forgotten.

He had given them to her once,
in a time where forever sounded believable,
and her laughter didn't have edges.

Years passed.

The sound stayed.

It followed her through corridors where her name was spoken without warmth,
through a home that taught her how to exist without being seen,
through every moment she chose silence over breaking.

And somewhere, far from her quiet ruins,
he grew into a man the world bowed to-
a crown resting where grief had never quite left.

They weren't meant to meet again.
Not like this. Not when she had learned to disappear,
and he had learned to never look too closely.

But the anklets...
they betrayed her.

A single chime in a place too grand for something so fragile,
and suddenly-
he was looking.

Not at who she had become,
but at everything she tried to hide between
breaths.

And this time,
he didn't turn away.

Because some things don't return as memories-
they return as echoes.

And some loves don't survive time-
they wait for it to come back and listen.
