Thirteen years after the death of her mother, Elodie Marie Kennedy has grown into a bright, compassionate teenager-and a secret keeper. When Gideon kidnaps FBI agent Grace Ashcroft-whose own dark connection to Elpis is only beginning to surface-Elodie defies her father's wishes and races to Wrenwood Hotel to save her. There, she meets Rex, a boy with purple veins and the power to control blood, who is both Gideon's weapon and his victim. Together, they must survive a hotel overrun by speaking infected, unlock the secrets of a blind girl named Emily, and confront Gideon in his fortified care center.

But time is running out. Leon's Umbrella Curse is spreading. Gideon's Phase Two has begun. And Elodie must decide whether to embrace her powers as a Catalyst for hope-or let Gideon turn her into the foundation of a monstrous new world.
