Of Smoke and Scales

For the past ten years, Lorak has lived alone, forsaking all human company. After failing in his duty and breaking his vow, Lorak has isolated himself from his past, from the memory of the boy who went to war thinking he would find glory. He has set down his sword and decided to never pick it up again.

Until, one day, Lorak finds a mysterious woman left to die in the forest. Saving her, he is surprised to discover he has found a fey, one of the mysterious beings he had been warned about. However, when he learns that his sister is dying, Lorak makes a bargain and risks everything he has - the life he has built in isolation, the memories he has buried deep inside. He will go with the fey to her world for a year and a day, where he will pick up a sword again to teach her people.

Drawn into a world of magic and danger, Lorak finds himself in a precarious position when he learns that Lys, the fey with whom he had made a bargain, is a traitor to her own, and his presence might get her and those under her protection killed. However, as time passes, he finds himself more and more intrigued by Lys and the secrets that she hides.

As their bargain turns into a fragile love, Lorak must decide what he wants most. A peaceful life or one with the woman he loves. But, as Lys' past comes to light, their love might be crushed beneath the weight of fate.
