The Haunt of Her

Everything has been said and done. The formerly proud and ambitious Onceler now sits alone collecting dust just as everything else around him. But it wasn't always like this. Someone once stood next to him, hand in hand and, yes, in love with the Onceler. But she is gone. And now, all he can do is quietly lament, waiting for time to swallow him as well.

Every night, ever since his beard resembled that of snow, the aged Onceler sits and sits. His gaze forever fixed on the moon. He wonders and ponders, trying to find just why she only appears behind his lids. His wealth could carry him only so far and now, malnourished and depressed, he could only hope that his time is soon.

That and his flickering memory. Of her. Of what used to be. And now, it seems as though this recount of events might just be his last.
