The elimination portal is supposed to move people through space. When Nickel learns his recent elimination was "actually" one year ago, he learns space isn't the only thing the portal can move.
(Takes place a little while before the hectic events of the II reunion in season 2-season 3 has already happened but MePad is alive, basically. Forgive me if some of the details are wrong here.)
