Thud! The bucket hit the cold ground.

Water soaked through Penny's dress, clinging to her skin. She didn't flinch.

Behind her, Cara and the others giggled, their apologies dripping from with mockery.

"Lady's maid" one of them sneered.
"What a privilege."

Penny remained silent.

Cold hands, a colder heart. That was her life.

By the time she reached Lady Beatrix's chambers, her hair was still damp.
But Lady Beatrix smiled softly, unaware of everything beyond her door.

Gentle. Fragile. Untouched.

Nothing like the rest of her family.

The only solace she found was in the quiet of the library.
And sometimes while stealing glances at Lord Jeremiah.

But she was a maid.

And maids did not dare look at the sky for too long. Not unless they wished to fall into misery.
