Sweden, 1456. Declan, a fourteen-year-old boy, lives in a world and time where society has changed for the worse.

Declan feels misunderstood because the only people who listen to him are cruel, self-centered, and corrupt. But a glimmer of hope appears in his eyes when he imagines the Pure Heart: a legendary artifact that, according to legend, can restore humanity's goodness when its eight pieces are reunited.

When his own family abandons him, Declan embarks on an epic quest to travel the world collecting the heart's pieces. Along the way, he meets Jake and Oumar, who will travel with him through towns, cities, and forests.

Declan will soon understand that the world isn't black and white, and that, like an apple, he can rot just like everyone else. He will learn about the injustices that confront him with a real and cruel world.

And he will learn that sometimes, the hardest heart to save is his own.
