AJ Lynch's parents often tried to shield him from the story of his dad's childhood, but no one could protect him from it forever. Whispers were inevitable and, to be honest, AJ didn't care all that much. The only rule he was given after finding out was "Stay away from the Hollands."

Shane Holland, who had managed to get a lawyer to cut down on the charges he had faced from Paul Rice's tip off so he only had to face a few months in prison with community service and house arrest after that, somehow managed to reappear a few years later climbing back up the food chain of the drug industry in Ballylaggin, and had his very own daughter whom he was stuck with after his release: Imogen Holland.

Imogen, not much younger than AJ, is a girl who walks through life with her head down. Everyone knows who her father is and what he does, and they all think she's just the same. She doesn't have any friends and finds herself constantly walking in her father's shoulder just for protection, because no one these days likes a junkie nor the junkie's daughter.

When AJ discovers her, he isn't made aware of her last name. He does what his uncle, Tadhg always taught him and flirts with her. However, it quickly backfires because Imogen refuses to put up with it. Her defenses are put up in the form of thorns and mean words, and he is evermore intrigued, thus starting the mission to make Imogen stop Hating Eight.
