What did she do wrong?

Her brain invaded her with memories, only the good ones. She remembered running free between plants and trees. Following that butterfly.

It had its shiny wings. The orange was so intense it looked sweet. She never tasted it, though. Her mouth always lacked that sweetness, making her appetite causing his appetite to wane through tasteless slices of a burned life.

When she finally closed her eyes, she felt... nothing. No guilt, no grief, no weight, no blood running down her cheeks. No awe, no love, no amusement, no heat blooming on her face.

For once she wasn't failing anyone. There was nobody to protect. She was just ascending.

Ascending to a place where she could live harmlessly and happily. Maybe she could see her father again. The thought made her tail wag back in the real world; she missed him so much it hurt, even after all these years.
