Grayling Rost is a scavenger, a flesh-eating parasite living on the Isle of Zyr. To her, the wars of the Human Kingdoms are nothing but a brontide; rumours that don't matter as long as she finds her next meal.

But Grayling, despite it all, is still just a scavenger on a leash. Aydin Bloodfin, criminal ruler of the underground canals, has decided that his favourite parasite is finally good for more than just disposing of the bodies of his enemies.

The Kingdom of Eriuwan is marching. They need a front line of immortal Faeborn conscripts to break through the defences of the Endless North. But while the humans want land, Aydin wants an ancient artifact buried in the heart of the frost; one that could change the fate of the Isles forever.

Forced into the army and driven toward the ice, Grayling's only hope lies with an unlikely, troublesome stable boy and the human rebels defying their kingdoms. Together, they must reach the northern lands before the soldiers do; or fall to those trying to stop them.
