"I killed her."

The words did not come out in anger. They slipped out quietly, as if they had lived inside him for far too long.

He did not look at her when he said it. His body remained still, his hands tightly clasped together, his face shadowed with a guilt that refused to fade.

"I killed her," he repeated, softer this time. "With my own hands."

His voice trembled, not loud enough to break, but enough to reveal something deeply fractured beneath it.

He expected questions. Shock. Fear. He expected her to step away.

Instead, she moved closer.
