Evelyn Carter is twenty-six years old and already one of the most precise minds in her hospital.
She moves through her days efficiently, speaks carefully, and keeps her distance from most things, not out of coldness, but out of the particular vigilance of someone who learned very young that being seen too clearly tends to cost something.

When a documentary crew arrives to film her work with a dying patient, she agrees because the project matters and because Emily, her oldest friend, asked.

Elias Sinclair is twenty-eight and technically very good at a job he no longer loves.
He photographs things that pay well and mean nothing, and he keeps a camera on a shelf that he hasn't touched in almost a year.
He shows up to the assignment as a favour to his best friend Nate, fully intending to find a polite way out of it.
