Slice of Life
Evelyn Carter is twenty-six years old and already one of the most precise minds in her hospital. She moves through her days efficiently, speaks carefully, and keeps her distance from most things, not out of coldness, but out of the particular vigilance of someone who learned very young that being seen too clearly tends to cost something. When a documentary crew arrives to film her work with a dying patient, she agrees because the project matters and because Emily, her oldest friend, asked. Elias Sinclair is twenty-eight and technically very good at a job he no longer loves. He photographs things that pay well and mean nothing, and he keeps a camera on a shelf that he hasn't touched in almost a year. He shows up to the assignment as a favour to his best friend Nate, fully intending to find a polite way out of it. He doesn't expect the old man in the armchair with the beret. He doesn't expect the doctor who makes coffee too strong and smiles at the oven timer when she thinks nobody's watching. What follows is slow and quiet and occasionally funny and always just slightly more than either of them planned for, two people circling something real while separately trying to convince themselves they aren't. A road trip neither of them quite engineered. A family that loves loudly. A city in winter. A room in Paris where she says something true and he doesn't make a big deal of it, and for a little while it seems like closeness might not have a price after all. Then it does. ---- Just a Lens Away is a story about what it means to be seen without being consumed. About the people who stay when they find out the truth, and the ones who can't, and the ones who love you exactly as much as they're capable of and no further. This is the rewritten version and i hope y'all like it as much as me! :D
