Sixteen-year-old Cassian Whitfield lives alone in a rundown Los Angeles apartment, surviving on money sent by his distant parents, government scientists working in a remote island laboratory. When their experiment creates a fast-spreading, rabies-like virus, a failed transport allows it to escape aboard a ship that crashes into Los Angeles harbor-unleashing chaos on the city. Before he even understands what's happening, a government colonel breaks into Cassian's apartment and forcibly conscripts him, along with other survivors, into the military. Thrust into a war he never chose, he must fight to survive-not knowing the end of the world started with his own blood.
