The Cure for Humanity

In 1936, a deadly plague wiped out nearly all of humanity. Only a few hundred people from a small town in the continent of Europe survived. Now, in 2026, the population consists of around 1,500. Society had gotten used to remaining in the same area, especially considering the rest of the world is still ridden with sickness, embedded in nearly everything, from clothing to even the buildings inhabited by the diseased. So, they've stayed put. Built their lives around the same small town, now city, that they were trapped in while everyone else was fighting the plague.

But when people start exhibiting symptoms after nearly a century of peace, the city begins to panic. From a small cough to vomiting blood, the fear that maybe, just maybe, the disease was never fully eliminated from the society starts to creep into the survivors. After all, they know how the plague works now. It hides in their systems until nearly everyone is infected, then rapidly attacks the immune system. And if the plague really is back, there is nearly zero chance of survival, not when population numbers are so low.

That is, until an intern detects what appears to be human activity in other parts of the world. It seemed like a fluke at first, until the connection grew stronger. Maybe other people survived. And maybe, just maybe, they have the cure.

...but that would be simple, wouldn't it?
