"I need a wife."

"It's a contract marriage. One year. No emotional involvement. After that, we go our separate ways."

She stared at the file but didn't open it.

"...Why me?"

"For the same reason no one else chose you."

Silence.

Then

He continued, voice calm, almost indifferent.

"You won't expect anything from me. And I won't have to pretend."

Her fingers tightened slightly on her lap.

For a moment, it looked like she might walk away.

But instead, she asked softly

"...And what do I get?"

He finally looked at her.

"Freedom. No more questions. No more pressure to 'find someone.'"

A pause.

Then she nodded.

"Okay."
