Hong has one rule he has never broken: leave before you can be left. It has kept him intact across every situation that threatened to undo him, and he sees no reason to stop now.

Nut is not a reason. He is just a man Hong keeps running into, who pays attention in a way that is difficult to ignore and easy to misread. Who says okay like he means it. Who never pushes, which turns out to be its own kind of problem.

What happens between them one night is not planned and not discussed and not, Hong tells himself, significant. He is good at telling himself things. He has had years of practice.

But some things cannot be reasoned with. Some things have a weight that doesn't show up until you are already carrying them alone, in a quiet apartment, reorganizing your life around a future you never chose.

Nut realizes too late. Hong decides too early. And somewhere between those two timings, something that could have been everything becomes something neither of them knows how to name.
