Sometime after A Court of Silver Flames... Azriel is trying to get over Elain, since she has decided to leave Velaris to finally date Lucien; the fox has become a changed male since discovering his true parentage. Then, the Shadowsinger sees Lucien's oldest brother Eris at a gathering in the Hewn City, and the involuntary desires that have plagued him for centuries finally get the better of him. As Azriel sorts out his confusing feelings, he and Eris have to learn to navigate the complexities of their forbidden situation.
