Claire Reinhardt has always lived between two worlds. Raised along the quiet French coastline by a gentle French mother and a cold, brilliant German father, Claire grew up learning how to heal long before she ever understood war. While other young women dreamed of marriage and comfort, Claire found herself drawn toward medicine, blood, and the strange calm that came with saving lives.
When her father is called to serve near the front lines, Claire makes the choice to follow him as a medic, leaving behind the only home she has ever known.
But war is nothing like the stories told in cities.
As battlefields swallow villages whole and military camps become flooded with the wounded, Claire slowly gains a reputation among soldiers and doctors alike for her unnerving composure under pressure. The deeper she enters the violence of Napoleon's Europe, the more she begins to realize that survival often demands the loss of softer parts of oneself.
Then she meets Adrien Beaumont, a young French cuirassier born into duty, pride, and a future that has already been chosen for him.
