Where the Sea Ends

Kaimana Balles has never wanted to be anywhere else.

At twenty-three, she lives on Batan Island the way the stone walls do - quietly, stubbornly, as if she grew there. While the world beyond the Pacific beckons with scholarships, cities, and promises, Kaimana turns her back to all of it. She has made her choice, and she has made it loudly enough for her grandfather to hear.

Because Lolo Carding has heard it all before. He heard it from her mother too, right before she left.

Kaimana knows what he thinks when he looks at her - that she is her mother's daughter, restless beneath the calm, only a matter of time. She has spent years building her life into an argument against that. She will not leave. Not for money. Not for opportunity. Not for a man.

Then a stranger arrives on the island - and does not try to take her anywhere.

He doesn't offer her the world or tell her she is wasting herself here. He only stays, asks questions, and listens to her answers like they matter. And somehow, that is more dangerous than any invitation to leave.

Because Kaimana slowly realizes that she has never truly chosen the island. She has only ever been running from the ghost of a woman who chose to go. There is a difference between a life built on love and a life built on spite - and she is not sure, anymore, which one she has been living.
