The Ancient Greek word for tragedy is τραγῳδία (romanized: tragōidía), which literally translates to "goat song". It is derived from the combining of two Greek words: tragos (male goat) and oide (song/ode).
Eurydice Layne was born and raised in Gilead. Preparing herself for marriage was the only life she's ever known. She was the daughter of a top ranking Commander. She was one of the most promising young girls of this generations batch of plums. This meant, when Eurydice became a green, she had an array of men who wanted to marry her: young and old, colony commander and not.
Marriage probably wouldn't be so bad, she thought. She'd have freedom, or as much freedom as a wife had. And she'd be away from Mrs. Layne -- Mother -- who spent her free time hating her or beating her to a pulp, leaving bruises on the skin of one of the most godliest of girls.
She wanted away from home. Marriage was the closest escape.
There was another pathway to freedom; one that required sneaking out in the middle of the night, holding hands with Becka, and running far FAR away where no one would ever find them again. Maybe she'd go to Canada, the place Agnes' Pearl Girl was from. Anywhere would be better than here, especially if she were there with Becka.
But no, Eurydice didn't like her. Liking her... Loving her, even, would make her a gender traitor. And Eurydice wasn't a gender traitor. The only thing Eurydice Layne was or wanted to do was become Becka's very, very close friend.
